Dreamforce: The Dreamboat Experience

Event Rebels Dreamforce

“The Love Boat promises something for everyone.” The Dreamboat may not have been the Love Boat, but Dreamforce definitely tried to have something for everyone! For the first time in Dreamforce’s 13 year existence, the 170,000 person conference chartered a Celebrity Cruises ship to provide lodging to 1,100 conference attendees. This is not the first time a conference has chartered a ship as a “floating hotel”, but it is probably the most mainstream example of lodging alternatives, even being featured on Forbes.com. In a time where conference attendees are searching for alternatives to the traditional room block, such as airbnb, Dreamforce’s... Read more »

Live Streaming: Shark Week

The Discovery Channel will work with Meerkat to add a live-stream component to its popular “Shark Week” programming and embed the content on its website. Variety: “The Discovery Channel is still finalizing its Meerkat streaming lineup, but Byrne said that the network plans to host two to three live streams every day during the week, including a live shark feeding at the National Aquarium in Baltimore as well as Meerkats from shark experts and filmmakers to deliver a behind-the-scenes look at their work for the event. And with a little bit of luck, there will also be a live stream... Read more »

Why Would Hackers Attack Your Conference?

Hackers targeting big companies have become part of the regular news cycle. As of last year corporations such as Sony, Target and Staples have become victims of breaches involving personal information and credit cards. Even more recently, the data of 18 million current, prospective or former employees of the U.S. Government was successfully compromised in one of the biggest and most spectacular cyber attacks in history. While it might be comforting to think that hackers would only go after big name organizations, it would be wrong to think that conferences are exempt from cyber attacks. Just recently the Linux Australia... Read more »

Crowdsourcing Education Sessions

EventRebels are back from our week-long hiatus with some very exciting information and experiences to share with you. This past week, K.C. Hopson, EventRebels CEO, and I traveled to Fort Lauderdale, Florida for the 2015 PCMA Education Conference. PCMA does a lot really well, but one thing I’ve noticed over the last three annual conferences I’ve attended is PCMA’s willingness to experiment with format, room set-up, and education so we don’t have to. One outstanding experiment PCMA tried at this conference was crowdsourcing peer-led education. Adrian Segar, author of “Conferences That Work,” walked us through the process. It began the... Designing Emotional Sensory Experiences

What is Experience Design? Experience Design is about interacting your brand (event, company, product) with your consumer, allowing your brand to come alive for them. This creates a fresh connection between brand and consumer, in their personal world. These connections should be formed by experiences that are personally relevant to the consumer. It should be memorable for them, it should be interactive, and it should invoke emotion. The 3 Stages of an Experience Experience/Encoding – This is the stage where your consumer interacts with the brand message. During this stage your memory begins to encode the information it is receiving.... Read more »

Design Rebel: Summer Camp

Design Rebel: Summer Camp

There’s nothing that says summer time nostalgia quite like summer camp. The one time a year that we got to get away from our family, socialize with our friends who lived in different states, learn new skills, and party every night. Sounds a lot like a conference if you ask me. So, it should come as no surprise that more and more meetings are taking lessons from summer camp and applying them to their meetings. Here are just a few examples of how you can turn your conference into a nostalgic trip to summer camp for your attendees. Campfire Sessions Campfires... Read more »

Tech Tuesday: Create a Custom Social Network for Your Event

Events are communal by nature. In this digital age, attendees value the face to face connections they make once or twice a year, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use the digital technology that’s available to assist in building your community. Creating an online social network can be mutually beneficial for your organization and your attendees, and pay off big time over the long term. Studies have shown that customers who engage with a brand online report spending 20% to 40% more on that brand, or on that company’s products. The most successful events are strategic in nature and focus on... Read more »

Design Rebel: Whisky Business

Design Rebel: Whisky Business

“Horse racing and whisky cocktails seem to go hand in hand, says liquor connoisseur, Lance Mayhew.   While the Mint Julep is closely associated with the Kentucky Derby, the official drinks of the other two jewels in racing’s Triple Crown are not as well known.  For the record, the Preakness Stakes’ Black Eyed Susan and the Belmont Breeze round out springtime’s annual cocktail trifecta. Each of these cocktails is made with blended whisky and are annual crowd pleasers. With the 2015 Kentucky Derby behind us, horse racing fans head north this weekend to Baltimore for the Preakness. Without question the Kentucky... Read more »

Best Practices: Live Tweeting at a Conference

Have you ever sat in an education session listening contently to the speaker, but you watch out of the corner of your eye a colleague with his face in his phone? Chances are he’s either responding to a work email or he’s live tweeting. Live tweeting education sessions at a conference has steadily increased with the availability of smartphone’s and free conference wi-fi. Live tweeting can be a great way to keep notes during a session, share information with your peers and colleagues, favorite other live-tweeters for information you may have missed, and network with other live tweeters at the conference.... Design Rebel: Invisible Furniture

Design Rebel Square Logo

Sometimes, it’s what you don’t see that can have the greatest impact at an event. Adding transparent glass and acrylic pieces as accents can really do wonders for a space. The best part is that these clear furnishings can be incorporated in any room because they don’t dictate or change a color palette or style. They can also make a room feel bigger because they take up practically no visual space. Not to mention, it’s super cool when your decor and catering look like they’re floating in air! The popular transparent furniture, made of polycarbonate, is one of the latest trends in rental options... Read more »

Tech Tuesday: The Future of Event Websites – No Coding Necessary

Event Rebels Tech Tuesday

Your event website can make or break your event registration. As the first line of offense when attracting attendance, your website is necessary to provide up to date information on your event, answers to frequently asked questions, and all the minor details one needs to know when deciding to attend your event like hotel, transportation, and the schedule of events. One of the biggest issues I encountered when working for an association was creating and editing our website. We just didn’t have the level of coding skill necessary. Even making basic changes required sending a request to our IT department.... Read more »

Mobile Monday: 365 Day Event App Engagement

Event Rebels Mobile Monday

Engagement 365 days a year. That’s the ultimate goal of every association or corporation that spends money on their event apps. Nobody likes a one time only use app. It takes up space on your phone and ultimately gets buried in a folder of apps that you no longer use or gets deleted completely. Neither of those situations is ideal for the app that your association just paid thousands of dollars for. If you’re just looking to create an app that provides information about your specific event, then a basic throw-away app is probably what you should get. But, if... Read more »

Design Rebel: Sweet 16 Hot, New Trade Show Colors

2015 Trade Show Colors

To paraphrase the timeless lyrics of Cole Porter’s “Let’s Fall in Love”, birds do it, bees do it, even savvy trade show exhibitors do it. They all invite visitors to their nests, hives, and booths with color. Unlock nature’s not so secret, secret weapon: color. One of the most powerful lures, a hot, new color not only turns heads and catches the eye, it summons a closer look. As any new or experienced exhibitor knows, the competition to attract people your trade show booth can be fierce. What you may not be aware of is the effective use of color... Read more »
